Melissa is a Partner in the Labour & Employment practice group and practices in all areas of workplace law, for clients with unionized and non-unionized workplaces. Melissa represents employer clients in industries such as health care, post-secondary education, manufacturing, transportation and municipal relations. Melissa regularly acts as counsel in matters before grievance arbitrators, the Manitoba Labour Board and the Manitoba Human Rights Commission. Melissa has considerable experience in related areas such as human rights (particularly workplace accommodation matters), accessibility, workplace safety & health, workplace privacy and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues.
Melissa also maintains a practice of assisting individual employees with employment contract and severance package reviews and wrongful dismissal litigation. Melissa also acts for a union in the federal sector providing member representation during disciplinary proceedings.
Given her balanced approach to representing both employers and employees, Melissa is also passionate about neutral work and is available to act as a workplace mediator, workplace investigator and labour arbitrator.
Highlights of Melissa’s work in the community include: significant involvement with the Manitoba Bar Association, including serving as President; board member of Ronald McDonald Charities Manitoba and Capital Campaign committee member; board member of Food & Beverage Manitoba. Melissa believes that strong mentorship makes great lawyers, regularly acting as mentor to law students, as a principal to articling students, and is part of the firm’s Students Committee.
