Taxation Overview

Our firm deals with all aspects of taxation, including federal and provincial income tax, GST, sales and use taxes, and customs duties. We advise on the tax aspects of the wide range of corporate and commercial transactions that we handle, and we provide advice regarding general corporate and personal tax planning. We also provide tax advice in the areas of estate planning, wills and trusts, real estate and litigation. Our experience includes related international tax matters, and negotiating compliance matters with Revenue Canada and other tax authorities. We assist clients who are undergoing tax assessments and re-assessments, and we prepare and conduct appeals in matters involving reassessments.

  • Aggressive Tax Planning

    Tax planning is the process of structuring one’s affairs in order to defer, reduce or even eliminate the amount of tax payable to the government. We are allowed to arrange our affairs to minimize our income taxes as long as it is done in accordance with the provisions of the Income Tax Act (ITA). The ITA contains provisions intended to limit overly aggressive tax plans and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) even has a separate Aggressive Tax Planning Division tasked with ferreting out those plans or business structures that they consider to be off limits.
