Paul Brett has retired from Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP as of March 31, 2022, after having practised law for 47 years. Paul was an articling student at TDS in 1975 and continued on at the firm as an associate in 1976 after his call to the bar. Additionally, he was called to the bar in Saskatchewan in 1985 and Ontario in 1993.
Paul’s interest as an exclusively defence oriented litigator began as an articling student and continued throughout his career. His practice focused on civil litigation and transportation matters arising in the Provinces of Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, with an emphasis on agribusiness and food liability matters, as well as insurance defence, coverage and regulatory matters. His extensive practice also included the niche area of the law of amateur hockey administration and competition.
Paul has always been professionally active with a number of organizations, including the Manitoba Bar Association and Canadian Bar Association, as well as being a Law Society of Manitoba Bencher for six years. He is also a member of the Defense Research Institute, Association of Defense Trial Attorneys, Association for Testing and Materials, and Canadian Defence Lawyers, where he was also a member of the Board of Directors for six years. In addition, Paul is a past member of the Insurance Council of Manitoba and former chair and a current member of the ICM Incidental Sale of Insurance Committee. He has also been recognized annually by his peers for inclusion in Best Lawyers™ in Canada directory in the field of Insurance Law since 2015.
Paul has been very active in his community as a former board member of Maples Multiplex Centre, Maples Community Centre, Point North Project and St. James Canadians Junior Hockey Club. He was also counsel to Hockey Winnipeg and the Manitoba Junior Hockey League for over twenty years.
During retirement, Paul plans to spend more time with family, including six wonderful grandchildren in Calgary, Morden and Winnipeg, reclaiming his (so he says) ravaged physique, volunteering in various pursuits and travelling with his wife, Margaret, with an emphasis on warm weather destinations.
Paul’s passion, enthusiasm and humour is unmatched at the firm and he will be missed by all of us at TDS. We wish him all the best in his retirement. Safe travels!
