Truth and Reconciliation 2026

published 09/29/2026

September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On this day, we encourage our lawyers, paralegals, legal assistants, students and staff to take steps to further our knowledge and understanding of the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools, and to honour and remember the children who never returned home, Survivors, their families and communities.

Learning and Reconciliation

Publicly acknowledging and honouring this day is an important part of the reconciliation process, as outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action.

TDS supports practices that address the Calls to Action directed at the justice system, particularly Call to Action #27, which calls for cultural competency training for lawyers, including education on the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, Indigenous law, and Aboriginal-Crown relations.

“We call upon the Federation of Law Societies of Canada to ensure that lawyers receive appropriate cultural competency training, which includes the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, Indigenous law, and Aboriginal–Crown relations. This will require skills-based training in intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights, and anti-racism.”

At TDS

We encourage our TDS community to use this day as an opportunity to learn, listen and reflect, and to participate in educational and commemorative events taking place throughout Winnipeg, Manitoba and across Canada.

As a symbol of support, TDS provides orange t-shirts to all team members.
