Profile

I spent the first 25 years of my law practice as a litigator. My experience in the areas of criminal, family, and especially civil litigation made me a better advisor in the areas of real estate, commercial, corporate, contract, succession planning and municipal law in the next 25 years. Having helped many clients in the worst times of their lives makes me alert to potential problems that might arise when they are planning for their future and head them off at the outset.

I am a life-long resident of Central Manitoba. My family history was one of farming and farming equipment sales and service. I don’t have to guess at the issues that affect rural Manitobans, their families, their farms, their businesses and corporations – I live them. Whether a client needs a “starter” Will or house, or a corporation for their thriving business or farm, or now needs a plan to bring in the next generation, I want to be there to help them.

If it matters – and it often does in negotiations or planning – I have extensive experience in dealing with other lawyers. That comes not only from my years in practice; I am also a past President of the Central Bar Association, the Manitoba Branch of the Canadian Bar Association and the Law Society of Manitoba. I am a Life Bencher of the LSM, a member of its Discipline Committee, and the Society’s ad hoc practice management advisor. I have served on Manitoba’s Judicial Committee and Judicial Inquiry Board, and is a past Chair of Review Panels appointed under The Mental Health Act. Iam an Honorary Life Member of the Law Societies of Alberta and Saskatchewan and an Honorary Member of the Minnesota State Bar Association. I am a frequent presenter on practice management and office technology topics to the LSM’s CPLED and MCPD programs, the Faculty of Law, the Law Society of Ontario’s Solo and Small Firm Conference, the Lawyers Insurance Association of Nova Scotia, the American Bar Association TechShow, the Central, Western Manitoba, Yukon and NWT Bar Associations and the CBA’s Skilled Lawyer Series.
